Note | | Kathryn Fehr (Wedemeyer) Winans of Stonington, Conn., passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2011, the first day of spring. Known for her kindness, spry sense of humor, absolute devotion to her children and grandchild, and many years of commitment to sobriety, she brought much joy and light to friends and family. Born on March 1, 1934, to Wesley and Kathryn Wedemeyer of St. Louis, Mo., Kathy graduated from Vassar College in 1955 with a B.A. in English. She briefly worked in publishing before marrying David R. Winans Jr., of Westerly. There she raised three children and established many lifelong friendships. In 1982, she returned to St. Louis, where she worked for the Ladue News, during a period of her life she found rejuvenating. In 2001, she retired to Stonington to be closer to her children. Kathy enjoyed long walks, lively meals with family and friends, and the popular music of radio's golden era. She loved reading mystery novels, telling silly jokes, and tending to her plants. A member of the WACCO's (Women Alone Cooperative Community Organization) and a bemused bridge and mahjong player, she treasured her life in the Borough. She was predeceased by her son, Wesley W. Winans. She is survived by her children and their families: David and Victoria Winans of Lake Worth, Fla., and Molly and Rand Cooper and their daughter, Larkin, of Hartford, Conn.; by her brother and his family, Wesley D. and Susan Wedemeyer of St. Louis, Mo., and their children, Ann and Tony Balsamo and their son, Wesley, Claire Wedemeyer and Theo Wedemeyer; and by two dear second cousins. A memorial service will be held for Kathy at Calvary Church in Stonington on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to The ALS Association Connecticut Chapter, 4 Oxford Road, Unit D4, Milford, CT 06460 or to Masonicare Home Health & Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, Suite 200, East Hartford, CT 06108.
